Acupuncture for Anxiety

Acupuncture can be very effective for treating symptoms related to anxiety. Acupuncture helps to relax the nervous system for both immediate relief of anxiety, as well as reducing frequency and severity.

Acupuncture of anxiety works in many ways - the goal is to make your body more resilient to external stressors. We do this by addressing vasovagal tone, improving circulation to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, relaxing the nervous system, relaxing tense muscles, and even by addressing problems with digestion.

Did you know that many cases of anxiety are actually acid reflux??!! Countless times now, I have had a patient come in for anxiety who has "tried everything!" Medications didn't work, therapy didn't help... They had been having panic attacks and debilitating anxiety, but nothing had helped... Upon inspection with Chinese Medicine, we find problems with the stomach (even though they hadn't actually felt symptoms of reflux) - when we adressed this, they're anxiety went away! This is due to the vasovagal nerve that in innervates the lungs, heart, and stomach. It "percieves" problems with these three organs, but it doesn't always give the "correct" symptom - IE a problem in the stomach can present as heart palpitations and/or shortness of breath as opposed to heartburn. Since we all have stress in our lives (good and/or bad), when we have these anxiety-like symptoms, our brains are quick to associate them with some sort of stressor in our lives. So now, when we experience that stressor, our body produces that symptoms again and they reinforce one another to get worse and worse... When we address the problem with the stomach, we are able to break down this downward spiral and get lasting relief.

Effective Acupuncture Treatment for anxiety requires figuring out the physiological mechanisms that are in play, so your acupuncturist will ask you a lot of questions about how you feel physically when you experience anxiety. They will also evaluate your other systems to see what is at play behind the curtains. When we understand and treat the root of the physical problem, the symptoms decrease or are eliminated. This won't remove the stressors from your life, so lifestyle changes and/or counseling may still be required, but it can make both of those much easier and more effective.

anxiety

Acupuncture treatment for depression is much like acupuncture treatment for anxiety in that its causes are numerous and thus every case is treated a little differently. Also similar to anxiety treatment is that we focus a lot on the physical symptoms of depression and help to make the body more resiliant to external stressors.

Common symptoms of depression include lack of motivation, feeling emotionally and physically heavy or stuck, fatigue, and poor sleep. From a Chinese Medicine prospective, these are associated with "dampness," stagnation, and/or deficiency.

Acupuncture will help your body to clear the "dampness" (think of the body feeling heavy, bogged down, hard to move), increase overall circulation, and address any underlying deficiencies so you can begin to feel better - and often quickly!

Also like anxiety treatment, acupuncture is not going to eliminate external stressors so lifestyle changes, coaching, and/or counseling may still play an integral part of your recovery.
